But then she watched in horror as a new government came to power and her beautiful country changed from a thriving nation to one where citizens lived in abject poverty.

Connie visited the Selby Goodwill Job Connection office back in 2015. She was seeking employment because of a layoff from her job as a cashier at a grocery store that had gone out of business. Connie was facing many obstacles. She was newly-divorced, raising two kids as a single parent, and had no high school diploma nor any transportation.

Jane moved to Florida in February 2020 to help her sister take care of their elderly parents. Her sister begged her for months to move in with her and share expenses. Jane gave up everything that she had worked so hard for and moved to Florida, knowing that she would have to start all over again at the age of 62, but her sister assured her that she would help her adjust and that things would be fine.
Read Sandra's Story
Sandra has had a lot of jobs in her lifetime. At age 10, she worked alongside her parents and siblings in Texas, picking fruits and vegetables. Sandra attended school sometimes but most of the time her parents needed her out in the fields to help provide for the family. Sandra says, “Times were very hard and it was all about survival.”
Read Roy's Story
Roy’s mom was in prison from the time he was 5 until he was 14 years old. During that time, he lived with his father, who owned jewelry stores. As he was growing up, Roy worked with his dad and learned some things about jewelry. This was the “silver lining” in their relationship. However, Roy describes his father as abusive and reports that, while he abused everyone in the family, for some reason he was most abusive towards Roy.

Life was hard in the Philippines with few opportunities to earn money. So much so that Emma decided to move to Singapore to earn the money she needed to help her two sons go to college. It was important to her that they have a better life than she had, and she knew education was the key.

Joe, a veteran of the U.S. Army, came into the Goodwill Manasota Veterans Services program office looking for a new career. He had been working in the home healthcare industry but business had slowed to a crawl due to COVID-19 and Joe was not getting enough hours each week to pay his bills.
