Mission Moment

The Goodwill Veterans Services Program team serves veterans from many different walks of life. One veteran, Chris, stopped by a while ago to see what the program had to offer. He had served in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom campaigns.

Chris is 100% disabled from multiple injuries he sustained as a corpsman in Iraq. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after his service was done in the military. Then he was diagnosed with cancer. Chris’s struggles with his mental and physical health took a toll on his marriage, which ended after 23 years. Now he was alone and needed support. He was not looking for employment but needed the camaraderie that comes with being with other combat veterans who have shared experiences.

Todd told Chris about the Lutz Buddy Up Manasota meetings. Many veterans shy away from meetings or group therapy sessions where they are encouraged to talk about their PTSD. Todd let Chris know that Lutz Buddy Up was not that kind of meeting. It took a while to convince Chris that the group met solely for the purpose of providing camaraderie.

Once Chris finally decided to try out a Buddy Up meeting, he could not stop talking about how amazing it was. He said he didn’t know he needed something like this! Now he has become very involved with the Goodwill Veterans Services Program. He attends every Lutz Buddy Up meeting, helping to set up and break down. He helps track down veterans when the team receives awards or medals that have been donated to Goodwill. Chris researches the veteran so the team can get the award back into the hands of the person who earned it—or their family members. Chris volunteers to assist with all the team’s events and meetings as well. Clearly, he has found the support he was looking for, along with a way to support other veterans in need.

Chris sums up his experience with the Goodwill Veterans Services Program team very succinctly. He says, “They helped me find my way.”
