Read Jane's Amazing Story:
Mission Moment
Jane moved to Florida in February 2020 to help her sister take care of their elderly parents. Her sister begged her for months to move in with her and share expenses. Jane gave up everything that she had worked so hard for and moved to Florida, knowing that she would have to start all over again at the age of 62, but her sister assured her that she would help her adjust and that things would be fine.
The first thing Jane needed to do was find a job. However, the pandemic began and she and her sister were confined to the mobile home they were sharing. The state was shut down and the sisters were not even allowed to go and see their parents. Jane’s sister had to provide for them both because Jane had no income and had used her small savings to move to Florida.
For three months the sisters shared their small living space, day in and day out. They were worried about what was happening in the world and with their parents. They were having difficulties finding things that they needed at the grocery store. Cleaning supplies were scarce and their patience was wearing thin – they were going “stir crazy.” The began arguing about everything from what to eat to which TV show to watch.
In May, businesses began to open again. Jane and her sister were still afraid to spend time with their parents. However, they were able to get out of the house a little more and they did not feel quite as confined. Jane decided it was time to search for a job. Her sister recommended that she try applying at Goodwill because she knew that Goodwill was open for business and they hired older workers.
Jane completed an application and was called for an interview. She was sure she was not going to get an employment offer but she went to the interview and “put on her happy face.” Much to her surprise, she was offered a position as a pricer. Jane went home and shared with her sister that she was now employed. Her sister was delighted. Both women felt relieved that some of the financial burden could now be shared. They celebrated with a good meal and called their parents to give them the good news.
Jane has been with Goodwill for six months now. She loves coming to work every day. She loves the fact that she has her own GoodPartner Coach as well as the fact that Goodwill invests training time, on the clock, in all of their team members, including their older workers. Jane is taking classes to become a Certified Role Model Worker. She has enjoyed this training and says she has learned a great deal from the classes that she has completed.
Jane is thankful that Goodwill was there and willing to help when it was time to start a new chapter in her life.
