Read Joe's Amazing Story:
Mission Moment
Joe, a veteran of the U.S. Army, came into the Goodwill Manasota Veterans Services program office looking for a new career. He had been working in the home healthcare industry but business had slowed to a crawl due to COVID-19 and Joe was not getting enough hours each week to pay his bills. He wanted to work a full 40-hour week and he explained that the job would need to be on the bus line, since his driver’s license had been revoked a few years ago due to a DUI.
When Joe met with Todd, the program manager for the veterans’ program, he learned about grant funding available through Goodwill to assist veterans in obtaining a Class D Security License. Todd explained that there were many openings in the local labor market in this field. Joe would be able to get a good hourly wage and at least 40 hours per week. Joe was very interested and asked if he could participate.
Todd sent Joe to a week-long class at Right On Target Security Academy in Bradenton. Joe enjoyed the class and passed with flying colors. It took a little time for Joe to receive his actual license since the process had been slowed because of COVID-19. While he was waiting for his appointment to get his Class D license finalized, Todd suggested that they make good use of the time by working together to complete the necessary paperwork to get Joe’s driver’s license reinstated.
Regaining his license made a big difference in Joe’s life and for his self-esteem. One day, he showed up at Todd’s office with a huge smile on his face and a picture of himself and his wife out on a date. He just wanted to stop by to tell the team how pleased he was now that he felt like his life had gotten back on track since he began working with the Goodwill Veterans Services team. He explained that since the pandemic started, he had not had much of a reason to smile. Now he and his wife are so much happier.
A few weeks ago, Joe received his Class D License. Todd sent him immediately to an interview with one of Goodwill’s employer partners, TRVST Security. Joe started work that same day as a security guard.
Joe loves his new job. He is glad he got assistance at exactly the moment when he was ready to reinvent himself.
