Read Rose's Amazing Story:
Mission Moment
Rose’s parents crossed the border from Mexico into the US and now they were living in the States. Due to their immigration status, they were not able to leave the country to go back and get their young daughter, whom they had left in the care of her elderly grandparents. They wanted Rose here in the US with them, so they did the only thing they could do--they paid someone to bring her across the border. Rose was nine years old at the time and she remembers being very scared--but finally she was reunited with the parents she had not seen in a long time.
Rose started school in Florida, but she did not speak or understand English. She was unable to read the books she was given. Not being able to read gave her a sense of been left out. It was not until she was in the ninth grade that a teacher realized that Rose could not read because she had very poor vision. Rose went to a doctor for testing who diagnosed her as legally blind. Time went by and Rose graduated from high school.
Several years ago, a family friend told Rose about free services she could receive through the Division of Blind Services. Rose went to the DBS office and she got to meet with counselors and doctors. This program has helped her in many ways.
DBS helped her apply to DACA, a program for people who were bought to the US as children. A DACA work permit would allow her to get a job. Now that she could work, she found a job at a local college as a custodian. She liked her job, but it was mostly solitary work. It was part-time and did not come with any benefits. Rose had heard about jobs at Goodwill. She heard that they included benefits and provided a 40 -hour work week. Rose applied and she got the job.
Rose loves her job. She says she would find it hard to work anywhere else. She loves being part of a team and she loves all her co-workers. Rose also has a GoodPartner Coach. Her Coach told her about Goodwill’s 401K program. The first time she heard about it, she thought it sounded risky. She thought she would lose her money if she ever had to leave Goodwill. Her Coach gave her more details and Rose enrolled in the program.
Rose talks about all the things that she loves about Goodwill. She is happy that she has a 401K. She is ecstatic that she has a job that she really enjoys. She likes to help her customers and many of them know her by name. Rose also loves the fact that she has a GoodPartner Coach who helps her with her goals. She wants to work toward becoming a US citizen and to continue working for a company who values her hard work.
Rose is glad she works at a company that makes her feel at home—that she is part of the family.
