Mission Moment

Anna lived most of her life in South America. She was happy there when she was a child. In her community, everyone knew each other and were like family. But then she watched in horror as a new government came to power and her beautiful country changed from a thriving nation to one where citizens lived in abject poverty. Under the new government, gas prices began increasing, jobs were disappearing, and food shortages became the norm. It was a soul-crushing situation

. Anna’s parents decided it was time to leave the country. They packed up and traveled to Miami. Once there, the family began to thrive again. They became citizens. Anna worked hard and got her license to sell insurance. She sold insurance in Hispanic communities in Miami and never really needed to work on her English skills.

When Anna decided to leave Miami and move to the west coast of Florida, she knew it was time to work on her English fluency. She needed to get a job but she was not sure who would hire her because of her language barrier. She decided to apply at Goodwill, hoping they might be able to use a hard worker regardless of her ability to speak English. Anna got the job!

She was happy to hear that Goodwill would provide a life coach and English classes while she was on the clock. As her English improved, she was able to do more. She participated in the GoodwillWorks program and became a Certified Role Model Worker. Anna’s manager says that she is one of the hardest workers on the team.

Anna says she is grateful to live in the United States. She is thankful to Goodwill for the training and recognition that she receives and she is delighted to come to work each day and to do a job she loves. She is glad that she found an employer that recognized her work ethic, was willing to give her a job AND was committed to helping her improve her English skills.
